Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that allows its users to take photos, tweak them using filters and share photos and videos publicly or privately on the app. The number of users has been in a rapid growth as well as uploads since it was launched in 2010. In December 2014, Kevin Systrom, the co-founder of instagram, announced that Instagram has 300 million users accessing the site per month.
In terms of the specific issue I’ve focused on is how celebrities could influence teens weight and health, and as I found out people are easier persuaded by visual images rather than words, I consider Instagram, as one of the most popular social network apps of sharing photos, can help me to expand my understanding of obesity and healthy living and is a good way to collect data from Internet.
Hashtag is one feature that I have exploited to analyze data that is relative with obesity and health. And model as the main part of celebrities to represents standard of beauty, I guess it would be interesting to look through the hashtag of “plus-sized model” and “model”. And I found out there is many plus sized models promoting their standard of beauty. However most of them are morbidly obese. The comments below are diverse basically into two aspects. On the one hand people think being overweight is disgusting and it is unacceptable to promote this kind of unhealthy living habits but on the other, there is still a lot of people supporting those plus sized models. I browsed a few people’s instagram account on the both hands and I found out people who disagree those plus sized models don’t have obese issue mostly but those people who supporting them are overweight in different levels. However, there is nothing wrong with being yourself, the boundary of that is health. And it seems hard to be fat and healthy at the meantime. Here comes 3 points summary after the exercise of scraping web
- Celebrity can influence teen easily
- Most of the followers of plus sized models have obesity issue in some way
- The aesthetic conceptions and moral standards set by social mainstream vary enormously.
From the exercise of scraping web data, I realized the biggest challenge is the ethics behind the standard of beauty. There is nothing wrong for those big size people being confident and being beautiful but the issue is it’s hard to find the balance between health and oversize. Everyone has different standards of beauty but the only premise is being healthy.
